Loon Dive Fundraiser
We’re thrilled to announce the return of the Rubber Loon Dive for Summer 2025!
In past years, our loon competitors raced down the river, showing off their speed. But last year, we shook things up and put their diving skills to the test. After an exhilarating competition last fall, we’re excited to bring the Loon Dive back this July!
Join us for the fun and launch your loon into the lake (or we can do it for you!) and see if they can land in one of the top three floating rings. It's going to be a splash!
Visit https://www.esf.edu/aic/loons.php to sponsor a loon!

Loons and Logs Fundraiser
LOONS AND LOGS FUNDRAISER EVENT
The Annual Rubber Loon Race is going back to its origins with ‘Loons and Logs’ making a comeback! The Loons and Logs event originally celebrated the connection between humans and the natural history of the Adirondacks but, just like nature has evolved and changed so has this event. With the loss of the bridges on the Sucker Brook Trail due to the unprecedented flood on July 11th, 2023, which served as the start and finish lines, we have decided to change things up and test our loons' diving skills instead! We are excited to see which loon will be crowned the best diver! Like in years past, you can sponsor a loon for $10 for your chance to win the title of the first-ever Loon Diving Champion (and a prize, of course).
Since the event is all about Loons and logs, we thought it would be fun to embrace losing our bridges by challenging you to build a bridge made of logs - well, popsicle sticks, but still wood. For just a $10 entry fee, you can show off your design skills in the BYOB (Build Your Own Bridge) Competition. Construct the bridge that can hold the most weight and earn the title of Bridge of Brawn or go for aesthetics and compete for the title of Bridge of Beauty. One entry fee lets you compete in both divisions. The top competitors in each division will win a night at Huntington Lodge on the ESF Newcomb Campus.
To sponsor a loon competitor or to register for the bridge building competition visit esf.org/aic and click the links for each event.

Build us Bridges! Competition and Fundraiser
The Rubber Loon Race held during the Loons and Logs event has been a staple fundraiser for the Adirondack Interpretive Center. This year, in keeping with our theme of Loons and Logs we have also decided to embrace the loss of bridges from the 2023 flooding event with a new fundraising competition inviting visitors to build a bridge made of logs (popsicle sticks) in our first ever Build Us Bridges! Competition. Two categories will be judged: Bridge of Brawn and Bridge of Beauty.
Each bridge category has 4 age divisions. Both the Loon Dive and the Build Us Bridges! events will help raise money critical to supporting free public educational programming here at the AIC.
Visit https://www.esf.edu/aic/build-bridges.php to register for the competition and for a list of the rules!

Mindfulness Experience at Camp Santanoni
Come to Great Camp Santanoni for an immersive experience in the tradition of Shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing, a Japanese wellness practice that helps individuals access the healing properties of nature. You will be invited to slow down, be curious, and use all your senses to more fully experience the nature and the heritage of the Santanoni Preserve. This mindfulness experience begins at the Gate Lodge with an orientation, warm-ups, centering, and breathing exercises intended to connect participants to their bodies and the world around them. We will then make our way to the Farm Complex, using our senses to become more attuned to our surroundings and taking time for an extended sit among the trees to deepen our connection to the land and nonhuman world. At the farm, we will shift our awareness to the landscape features that represent the more recent human story of the place. We will explore the site’s buildings and consider the continuity of both natural and human history in our present moment. Upon our return from the Farm Complex, we will reflect on the experience and understand how the practice of mindfulness can be used in daily life. Following the mindfulness session, participants are invited on an optional group bike ride into the Main Camp with a special tour of the Main Lodge and walk to the historic bathhouse and beach. All are welcome, with a special invitation for nonprofit leaders and staff to take time for renewal and a reset at Camp Santanoni this July.
This experience is led by Kripalu-certified Outdoor Mindfulness Guide and longtime preservation leader, Susan West Montgomery while the bike tour is led by AARCH Executive Director Erin Tobin. The mindfulness experience begins at 9 AM and ends at 12:30 PM, and the bike excursion ends at 3 PM.
There is a suggested donation of $40 per person and $35 for nonprofit staff and board members. Register at https://secure.qgiv.com/.../event/santanonimindfulness/
Please note that this outing includes roughly 2.5 miles of walking at a leisurely pace over a dirt road. The afternoon bike ride requires attendees to bring their own bicycles and cycle 9.6 miles (round trip) on a dirt road to and from the Main Camp. The road features a mix of flat, rolling, and uneven terrain.

Bogs, Birds, and the Boreal Beat: Climate Change and Life at the Edge of the Boreal
Bogs, Birds, and the Boreal Beat: Climate Change and Life at the Edge of the Boreal
Michale Glennon, Ph.D. - Senior Research Scientist
New York State’s Adirondack Park is a large, intact breeding ground for numerous migratory bird species, several of which are declining throughout their range. A unique component of the Adirondack avifauna is the birds inhabiting the boreal peatlands of the park. Climate change is now widely recognized as the pre-eminent threat to biodiversity in the 21st Century. At the southern range extent for this ecosystem type and many of its avian inhabitants, the park is a valuable location from which to monitor changes in bird populations from a warming climate. Findings from long-term monitoring of boreal birds in the Adirondacks suggest that bird responses to climate change may be mediated by land use patterns, highlight the importance of a patchy habitat distribution, and raise important implications for potential conservation strategies in these habitats.

As You Like It
As You Like It is a romantic comedy by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written around 1599. The play follows the story of Rosalind, who flees persecution in her uncle’s court by disguising herself as a young man named Ganymede and escaping to the Forest of Arden. There, she encounters her love interest, Orlando, and a variety of other characters who are also seeking refuge or self-discovery. The play explores themes of love, identity, nature vs. society, and the fluidity of gender roles, all with Shakespeare’s trademark wit and wordplay. It ends with multiple weddings and a sense of restored harmony.

Hidden Stories of Camp Santanoni
Do you think you know Camp Santanoni? We’ll let you in on a secret… there are so many more stories to tell! On this program, we will explore lesser-known perspectives on Santanoni ranging from the site’s Indigenous history to the ongoing, often unseen work of maintaining the camp. This wide-ranging program will highlight Santanoni’s labor history over time, the evolution of mechanical systems and infrastructure at the Main Camp, the Pruyn family’s role in the anti-suffrage movement, the intricacies of managing historic sites in the Adirondack Forest Preserve, and more! (Did you think we’d spill all our secrets in the description?) Join us as we uncover some of Santanoni’s hidden stories and further broaden the interpretation of this treasured National Historic Landmark.
This outing is led by Santanoni Interpretive Coordinator Jennifer Betsworth and AARCH Executive Director Erin Tobin.
There is a suggested donation of $45. Space on a horse-drawn wagon is available by first-come, first-served reservation. Register at https://secure.qgiv.com/.../santanonihiddenstoriestour/
Please note that this tour involves walking on uneven ground and navigating some stairs. Entering and exiting the Main Camp is done by boarding a wagon (requiring two steps to enter and exit) or 9.6-mile (round-trip) hike/bike on a dirt road (bring your own bike).

Feeding a Region: Can We Solve Hunger for the Long Haul
Feeding a Region: Can We Solve Hunger for the Long Haul?
Sawyer Bailey - ADK Action Executive Director
Many people think hunger will always exist in America. But just because we don't have the answer to this challenge on a national stage, doesn't mean we can't solve it here at home in the Adirondacks. What would be possible if we restructured our safety nets to support rather than circumvent our local farmers and producers? AdkAction and our partner organizations have been reimagining the future of our food systems by connecting our neighbors in need directly with local farms. This lecture explores how these programs impact the lives of real Adirondackers on both sides of the food system and how this model could support small-scale agriculture as a growth industry in our region.

Kids Shelter Building
In this hands-on workshop for ages 10–16, kids will learn how to build a sturdy outdoor shelter using natural materials. Learning Through Comics
This workshop will explore the value of drawing as a tool for learning! Drawing can be a potent way to internalize new information and investigate a curiosity. You don’t have to be an “artist” to benefit from exploring new subjects with a combination of both words and pictures. This workshop will introduce participants to the joys of visual note-taking and together we will spend time researching a topic of choice and creating a single-page educational comic from what we learned.
No drawing experience necessary!
Materials needed: colored pencils, graphite pencils with erasers, printer paper (at least 2 sheets per participant), pens (just regular ballpoint pens are perfect).
