Learning Through Comics
This workshop will explore the value of drawing as a tool for learning! Drawing can be a potent way to internalize new information and investigate a curiosity. You don’t have to be an “artist” to benefit from exploring new subjects with a combination of both words and pictures. This workshop will introduce participants to the joys of visual note-taking and together we will spend time researching a topic of choice and creating a single-page educational comic from what we learned.
No drawing experience necessary!
Materials needed: colored pencils, graphite pencils with erasers, printer paper (at least 2 sheets per participant), pens (just regular ballpoint pens are perfect).

2025 Firetowers Light the Night
The NYS Chapter of the Forest Fire Lookout Association is pleased to announce the 12th Annual Lighting of the Fire Tower Event! Saturday, August 30th 8:30 pm we hope to have a light begin to shine in the cab of many towers across NYS! Last year we had so many wonderful volunteers that we were able to light over 30 towers! We hope to increase that number this year. In the event of rain, the event will be held on Sunday, August 31st at 8:30pm. The event is done to honor the men and women who worked in these historic towers; protecting homes, businesses, communities and surrounding forests. The plan is to place a light in fire towers around the state from 8:30pm to 9:30pm. We invite people to go to locations around the community (listed on our website) where they can look up, see the light on the horizon and remember that there was a fire tower there watching over them. Thank you to Doug Hamilton for this wonderful idea to honor the past! This is not a hiking event! This is an invitation to visit an area in your community where you can see the fire tower light come on when you look up. Plan a small gathering, plan refreshments and enjoy! All Illuminators will read aloud the names of those who served in the towers as they turn on the light. If you have any questions, please reach out to lauriejrankin@gmail.com and she will get you all the information you will need. They will open registration for veteran Illuminators on July 20th and for new persons who are interested registration will open on July 28th. They will close registration on August 18th to allow time for all Illuminators to get their advertisements out. Additional information can be found at our website: www.nysffla.org
Please remember this is not a hiking event! This event is tailored for individuals to view from a distance, gazing upward and reflecting as they witness the radiant light emanating from the fire tower.

Feeding a Region: Can We Solve Hunger for the Long Haul
Feeding a Region: Can We Solve Hunger for the Long Haul?
Sawyer Bailey - ADK Action Executive Director
Many people think hunger will always exist in America. But just because we don't have the answer to this challenge on a national stage, doesn't mean we can't solve it here at home in the Adirondacks. What would be possible if we restructured our safety nets to support rather than circumvent our local farmers and producers? AdkAction and our partner organizations have been reimagining the future of our food systems by connecting our neighbors in need directly with local farms. This lecture explores how these programs impact the lives of real Adirondackers on both sides of the food system and how this model could support small-scale agriculture as a growth industry in our region.

As You Like It
As You Like It is a romantic comedy by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written around 1599. The play follows the story of Rosalind, who flees persecution in her uncle’s court by disguising herself as a young man named Ganymede and escaping to the Forest of Arden. There, she encounters her love interest, Orlando, and a variety of other characters who are also seeking refuge or self-discovery. The play explores themes of love, identity, nature vs. society, and the fluidity of gender roles, all with Shakespeare’s trademark wit and wordplay. It ends with multiple weddings and a sense of restored harmony.
