The Battle of the Gaps
Join us in Newcomb on August 15–16, 2026, for The Battle of the Gaps, a Civil War living history event at Overlook Park. Experience authentic Union and Confederate encampments, artillery and cavalry demonstrations, infantry drills, mail call, recruiting and Sanitary Commission presentations, and civilian camp life as reenactors bring the Civil War era to life. Throughout the weekend, visitors are encouraged to explore the camps, meet living historians, and enjoy ongoing demonstrations and displays.
Saturday's program features an artillery signal firing to open the day, cavalry and mountain howitzer demonstrations, talks on Major Charles F. Pruyn in the Seeley Exhibit Hall, the Battle of South Mountain (Fox's Gap) reenactment, and a Children's Infantry Drill. The evening concludes with a guided candlelight walk, "The Letters of Pvt. William Wood," followed by a spectacular Artillery Night-Fire Display.
On Sunday, the weekend continues with additional artillery and cavalry demonstrations, another presentation on Major Charles F. Pruyn, and the Battle of South Mountain (Turner's Gap) reenactment before the camps close for the weekend.
Food vendors will be on-site serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner on Saturday, and breakfast and lunch on Sunday, making it easy to spend the entire weekend enjoying this immersive Civil War experience in the heart of the Adirondacks.
